How to read sim racing telemetry

Start with comparable laps

Telemetry only answers a useful question when the laps are comparable. Use the same car, setup, tyre compound, fuel range, assists, weather, and track conditions. Exclude out-laps, pit laps, invalid laps, traffic, and obvious mistakes. A slower lap in different conditions can contain a better corner, but it is a poor whole-lap reference.

Choose a clean, repeatable reference—not automatically the single fastest lap. One heroic corner followed by a mistake can make the trace harder to learn from than a lap that is consistently two tenths slower.

  • Hold car, setup, fuel, tyres, assists, and weather constant.
  • Compare completed clean laps from the same game version.
  • Write down the one corner or behaviour you intend to test.

Align by distance and begin with delta

Compare laps against distance around the circuit rather than elapsed clock time. Distance alignment puts both cars at the same place, so braking points, apex speed, and throttle pickup line up even after one lap has already gained time.

Start with the delta trace. The steepest changes identify where time is being won or lost. Then inspect the inputs immediately before that change. The earliest difference is usually more useful than the final symptom. A poor exit may begin with an overly ambitious brake point several seconds earlier.

Split the corner into phases

Review the approach, initial braking, pressure release, rotation, apex, throttle pickup, and exit separately. On entry, compare where braking begins, how quickly pressure builds, and when it starts to release. In the middle, compare minimum speed, steering demand, and line. On exit, compare the first throttle application, the point of full throttle, steering unwind, and delta at the next braking zone.

Do not optimise one number in isolation. A higher minimum speed that pushes the car wide can delay throttle. A lower minimum speed can still be quicker if the car rotates cleanly and accelerates earlier. Judge the complete corner and the following straight.

Worked example: a false entry gain

Lap B gains 0.12 seconds under braking but loses 0.28 seconds from the apex to the next braking zone. Its later braking point is not an improvement: minimum speed is lower, steering remains loaded longer, and full throttle arrives later. The useful experiment is not “brake even later.” It is to restore the earlier brake point, shorten the coast phase, and release pressure more smoothly.

Change one variable for three laps, then compare the average outcome. If the delta improves only once, the change may not be repeatable.

Common interpretation mistakes

Earlier throttle is not automatically better if it creates wheelspin or forces a lift. More brake pressure is not automatically shorter braking if ABS intervention or lockup reduces control. More steering angle can indicate understeer rather than more rotation. A delta gain before a corner can disappear down the next straight.

Always read speed, inputs, line, slip, gear, and delta together. Telemetry is evidence for a driving experiment, not a scorecard that prescribes one universal trace.

Your next-lap checklist

Pick one corner. Find the first trace difference. Describe it without judging it. Connect it to line, speed, and delta. Choose one small change. Run three laps with everything else held constant. Keep the change only if it improves both time and repeatability.

  • What changed first?
  • Where did the delta change fastest?
  • Did the gain remain at the next braking point?
  • Can you repeat it three times?
